Key Clarifications On NMC MBBS Fee Rule 2026:

According to official guidelines, NMC has clarified that the MBBS course consists of 4.5 years (54 Months) and 1 year of rotating Internship. Now, fees must only be charged for 4.5 years, not for the internship.

Why This Clarification Matters?

Many medical colleges in India were:

  • Charging extra fees during an internship

  • Asking students to pay for non-academic periods

  • Sometimes, even charging internship-related fees

This created a financial burden on students and families.

The NMC has now clearly stated: Charging fees beyond academic teaching duration is not justified.

Legal Backing and Supreme Court Judgement Behind the New NMC Rule:

The decision is based on:

  • National Medical Commission Act, 2019

  • CBME Guidelines 2024 (GMER)

  • Supreme Court judgments like:

  • T.M.A. Pai Foundation v. State of Karnataka

  • Islamic Academy of Education v. State of Karnataka

  • P. A. Inamdar v. State of Maharashtra

These rulings emphasize that:

  • Fees must be reasonable

  • Must be transparent

  • Cannot be exploitative

Conclusion

The NMC’s latest clarification takes a major step toward protecting MBBS students from unfair fee practices. By restricting fees to the actual academic duration, the commission reinforces its commitment to ethical and student-friendly medical education.
