MBBS Course Details

Length of Course:

A total of 5½ years for completing these (9 semesters) academics, plus one year for working as an intern on the internship program are required to complete an MBBS degree from abroad according to India's NMC guideline requiring 54 months for an MBBS from another country.

Language of Instruction:

English throughout — lectures, textbooks, and exams. No need to learn Nepali for academic purposes, though Hindi is widely understood locally.

Course Structure:

Foundational life science courses of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, as well as Community Medicine will be taught in the first 2 years of the program. The basic clinical courses that are given (such as Internal Medicine; Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, and Pediatric clinical sciences) will be taught during the 3rd and 4th years. Finally, during the last semester of the MBBS program, the students will take Forensic Medicine, Ear/Nose/Throat, and Eye clinical sciences.

Degree Internship Process:

Internships are mandatory following completion of the MBBS degree program, with 12 consecutive months of rotations through Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Community Medicine, all under the supervision of staff at their respective hospitals. The internship process serves to fulfill the requirements of both Kathmandu University and in accordance with FMGL guidelines outlined in India. Indian students will need to check at the time of graduation from KMU whether any additional supervised internship time in India is required per current guidelines. 

Recognitions & Accreditations

NMC recognition:

Recognised by the Nepal Medical Council and Nepal’s Ministries of Education and Health. (Note: “NMC” can also mean India’s National Medical Commission, which separately decides degree acceptability in India.)

WHO/WDOMS:

WHO doesn't accredit colleges; relevant is listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), which Nobel has. Avoid claims of direct “WHO approval.”

Further Global Recognition:

Previously listed in IMED: graduates must verify eligibility for overseas licensure (e.g., ECFMG = USA). 

Meet NMC (India) standards:

Nobel's MBBS meets the requirements of India's FMGL 2021 (i.e., 54+ months; taught in English; requires 12-month internship; must be on WDOMS and recognised by host country). Students must have passed NEET exam.

Application Timeline:

The admission cycle is usually aligned with the NEET calendar: the NEET-UG examination (approximately May) is held; the results are announced several weeks later; the applications for Nepalese students to study in Nepal open; there is a rolling process for verifying documents and making offers; students are then required to pay fees and obtain their visa; and finally, classes commence (per the Kathmandu University academic calendar), generally in the latter part of the year.

How to get to Nobel Medical College?

Located at Kanchanbari, Biratnagar. Jogbani (Bihar) - the border with India is about 6 kilometers via road, which allows for easy border crossings for Indian citizens due to the border arrangement between India and Nepal. In terms of air travel, there is an airport at Biratnagar which connects to Kathmandu and other cities within Nepal. In terms of ground transport, Biratnagar has regular bus service as part of Nepal's Mahendra Highway network.

Campus features:

The facilities on campus consist of lecture halls, skill laboratories, libraries, hostels, mess facilities, and sporting and extra-curricular opportunities outside of class.

Cultural Events:

There are many different nationalities (Nepalese, Indian, and International) and cultures represented by the students at the school, which provides students the opportunity to participate in festivals and other cultural or social activities, giving them a unique opportunity to experience different cultures from around the world.

The long-established presence of Indian students makes adjustment easier; there are hostels and messes that offer Indian-style meals as well as Nepali and continental cuisine, and there are many restaurants in Biratnagar that serve both North and South Indian food. 

Career Opportunities After MBBS

Practice in India:

The MBBS alone doesn't grant Indian practice rights — you need a NEET-qualified entry, a degree meeting FMGL norms (which Nobel's does), and a pass in India's licensing exam after returning.

FMGE/NExT Eligibility:

FMGE (historically ~25–30% pass rate) is being phased out in favour of NExT, the unified licensing exam for Indian and foreign-trained graduates. Check the current exam structure with NMC closer to your graduation year.

PG Opportunities:

Nobel has its own MD/MS programs in various specialities or graduates can opt for NEET-PG in India (after licensing) or postgraduate studies abroad.

World Pathways:

The WDOMS listing offers flexibility on licensure pathways for other countries (e.g., USMLE/ECFMG for the US, GMC for the UK) with their own set of requirements. Starting salaries in India are said to be roughly ₹6–12 lakh/year, depending on specialisation and location.
