About Karnali Academy of Health Science
ABOUT KARNALI ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES
KAHS is an autonomous health sciences university established through an Act of the Parliament of Nepal. It was created by upgrading the former Karnali Zonal Hospital in Jumla to address the significant gap in access to quality healthcare and health sciences education.
The Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS) is situated approximately 375 km northwest of Kathmandu in Chandannath, Jumla District, Karnali Province. The campus is located roughly 500 metres as the crow flies east of Jumla Bazar and is connected to the road network, hence easily accessible. It is located near Jumla Airport, thus facilitating easy air access for students and visitors. The district borders Humla, Dolpa, Kalikot and Mugu Districts.
1. Campus Infrastructure
The KAHS campus houses modern lecture halls, academic departments, simulation labs, and comfortable hostel facilities for students. The location in a remote mountain setting gives the campus a unique environment that directly supports community-oriented medical education.
2. Teaching Hospital
The KAHS Teaching Hospital opened on 17th Kartik, 2069 (Nepal Sambat) and provides outpatient and inpatient services, including diagnostic services (lab, X-ray, USG, ECG etc.) as well as surgical services.
3. Labs and Research Facilities
There are new labs that allow for medical training and research. KAHS students take part in programs such as health camps, outreach programs, and public health education to help prepare for providing medical service to underserved populations upon completion of their training.
4. Library & Learning Resources
The KAHS library is stocked with medical journals and textbooks. According to available data, the library holds over 10,000 medical journals and textbooks.
5. Student Life and Campus Environment
Many of the students have participated in health camps, public health initiatives, or community outreach programs. The estimated student population across the various programs is about 200 – 250 students per cohort. Most students will have approximately 4:1 to 5:1 student-to-faculty ratios, which encourages interaction among students and faculty.
