About the Institute of Medicine

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University with a mandate to train all categories of health manpower for Nepal. In its early years, the emphasis was on mid-level health workers. By 1978, IOM launched its first MBBS batch — initially with just 22 students. Today, that number has grown to over 165 MBBS seats annually.

IOM is one of five technical institutes under Tribhuvan University. Its central campus — the Maharajgunj Medical Campus (MMC) — is the largest and most academically active unit, supporting over 700 medical students annually. IOM today oversees:

The flagship campus, located in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, is recognized as the pioneer healthcare profession education institute of Nepal. Internship Program

When students finish the part, which takes about 4.5 years they have to do a 12 months internship. This internship is compulsory. It involves rotating through different departments. The internship takes place at TUTH. Some other hospitals that are approved. This guarantees full hands-on training for all departments. As per NMC India guidelines Indian students may be required to do an additional internship in India.

NMC Recognition (India)

Seats for Foreign Students

Each year, IOM offers about 100 MBBS seats over all campuses. Allocation occurs based on merit through MECEE (Medical Education Common Entrance Examination), which is administered by the Medical Education Commission of Nepal (MEC). There are also provisions for reservation for Nepali students belonging to disadvantage group, Madhesi, indigenous communities and students with disability.

A Special Note for Indian Nationals: India nationals do not need any visa to enter into Nepal. It greatly simplify your travel and admission.

Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital acts as the teaching hospital of IOM. Being a super specialty hospital with 700 beds, it is the busiest tertiary care hospital in Nepal.

Internship Opportunities

Step 1: Eligibility Check

• By Air: Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), Kathmandu is approximately 8 km from Maharajgunj.
• By Road (from India): Indian students can travel by bus or private vehicle through the Sonauli, Raxaul, or Kakarbhitta border crossings. Indian nationals do not need a visa.
