About the Institute of Medicine

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University with a mandate to train all categories of health manpower for Nepal. In its early years, the emphasis was on mid-level health workers. By 1978, IOM launched its first MBBS batch — initially with just 22 students. Today, that number has grown to over 165 MBBS seats annually.

IOM is one of five technical institutes under Tribhuvan University. Its central campus — the Maharajgunj Medical Campus (MMC) — is the largest and most academically active unit, supporting over 700 medical students annually. IOM today oversees:

  • 8 Constituent Campuses (including Maharajgunj Medical Campus, Ayurved Campus, and nursing campuses)
  • 15 Affiliated Colleges (including National Medical College, Universal College of Medical Sciences, People's Dental College & Hospital, and others)
  • 29+ Academic Programs spanning MBBS, BDS, MD, MS, MPH, BSc Nursing, BAMS, BPharm, PhD, and more

Campus Infrastructure

The flagship campus, located in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, is recognized as the pioneer healthcare profession education institute of Nepal. Originally established as "Auxiliary Health Workers School" in 1972, it was upgraded to its current campus status in 2009 AD. It houses the highest number of academic programs, students, and faculty within the IOM system.

Teaching Hospital — Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH)

TUTH is the primary clinical training ground for IOM students. Key facts:

IOM is equipped with modern medical labs used for biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, physiology, and pharmacology. The institution actively promotes evidence-based research grounded in Nepal's local public health context, through its Central Department of Public Health and hospital partnerships.

The central library at Maharajgunj Medical Campus has a large library of medical books, medical journals, medical research papers and medical digital databases. Students are provided with e-resources and study rooms.
